The Enriching Value of Travel
Have you ever traveled somewhere and felt like your entire world view had been flipped upside down? That you had learned more in those few days than you could have in months of reading books? This is the power of travel and its ability to teach us about ourselves, other cultures and the world around us.
Author’s Story
As a musician, I have traveled all around the world and have been fortunate enough to experience the enriching value of travel firsthand. From playing a concert in a small village in Senegal, to performing a sold-out show at Carnegie Hall in New York, my travels have taught me more about myself and the cultures of others than any book could.
One of my fondest memories was traveling to Japan for a music festival. I remember feeling overwhelmed by the cultural differences and language barrier, but also incredibly grateful for the opportunity to experience something new. I tried new foods, explored local markets and came to appreciate the beauty and intricacy of Japanese art.
Another time, I found myself in a small village in South Africa. I was struck by the immense poverty of the area but also the incredible sense of community and resilience of the people living there. It was a powerful reminder of the inequalities that exist in the world and the importance of using our privileges to lift up others.
The Power of Travel
Travel has the incredible ability to broaden our horizons and challenge our preconceived notions. It allows us to step out of our comfort zones and immerse ourselves in new cultures and environments. Through travel, we can come to understand and appreciate the similarities and differences between ourselves and others.
Examples

- Travel can teach us about climate change. Visiting areas affected by rising sea levels or natural disasters can help us understand the urgency of this global issue.
- Travel can teach us about humanity. Meeting people from all different walks of life can help us understand our own privileges and biases, and foster empathy and understanding.
“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” – Ibn Battuta
